SYNOPSIS
Taking the cataclysmic Easter Sunday Bombings of churches and hotels in April 2019 by ISIS inspired Islamists in Sri Lanka as the point of departure, the film follows the life of Ashifa in Kattankudy, in Eastern Sri Lanka, as she navigates the complex social forces shaping her and other women’s stories. The film tells the story of the town as a woman’s tale.
about the director
A. M. Ashfaque has made a number of short films, some of which have been screened internationally and awarded. He has been a key figure in building a film festival in the war torn conflict ridden eastern city of Batticaloa and has worked on building bridges between Muslim and Tamil communities. His work touches upon marginality, gender, sexuality and concerns of class and displacement. Face Cover is his first documentary feature.
